Medela Recycles Program Benefits RMHC with New Breast Pumps

August is National Breastfeeding Month. This month, Medela has given us two things to celebrate! Medela introduced the program Medela Recycles to ease the stress on nursing mothers staying at Ronald McDonald House. The program is "focused on helping moms who have finished their breastfeeding journey help another mom start hers."

Every pump received through the Medela Recyles program "supports the donation of new hospital-grade, multi-use breastpumps and supplies to Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®). The goal is to provide moms with the same high-quality equipment they use at the hospital during their stay at Ronald McDonald House. This consistency will ease the transition from the hospital to Ronald McDonald House and give families caring for a baby in the NICU one less thing to worry about."

Find out how you can recycle your pump through Medela Recycles to support and comfort another mom during a challenging time.

What 35 Years of Helping Families in Need Means to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington, DC

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington, DC (RMHC DC) has been blessed to be a part of the Greater Washington, DC community for 35 years. In this city, we may see a lot of political change and power players, but we're still a city rooted in American values like family, opportunity, and lending a hand to those in need.

Support from a community that holds these values dear has made it possible for us to:

  • Give families the opportunity to seek the best health care for their seriously ill or injured child, no matter how far away it is;
  • Reduce day-to-day worries on families like where their next meal will come from;
  • Provide a comforting and supportive community that understands the struggles facing families of seriously ill children.

In 35 years, we've served more than 175,000 family nights. Each family has a permanent place in our hearts. On this anniversary we celebrate our past families and we look to the needs of our future ones.

Read on to learn more about our beginnings, growth, and plans for the future!

June 6, 1980: The Beginning of RMHC DC

It took a lot of love and support from the community to open the first Ronald McDonald House of Washington, DC. It was the 16th Ronald McDonald House to open in the country.

Re-purposing an old Spanish colonial home that had belonged to nuns in a neighborhood in Northeast Washington, DC, a small staff began to offer a home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill children seeking treatment at area hospitals.

Ronald McDonald House's Roots In McDonald's Shamrock Shake

In honoring the legacy of Shamrock Shake’s integral role in the building of the first Ronald McDonald House, McDonald’s in the DMV will donate $.25 from every McCafé Shamrock Chocolate beverage sold from March 11-17 to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington, DC.

Shamrock Shakes benefit RMHC March 11-17

What does the McDonald's Shamrock Shake have in common with Ronald McDonald House Charities?

Flashback to the early 1970s: Philadelphia Eagles tight end Fred Hill and his wife Fran’s young daughter Kim was battling leukemia. The couple routinely slept on chairs and benches in the pediatric oncology unit at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to stay by her side. In talking to other families doing the same, the Hills learned that many had traveled from far away so their children could get the best care, and they didn’t have money to pay for hotel rooms. Local pediatric oncologist Dr. Audrey Evans understood the importance of family-centered care and shared her vision for a home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill children.
